"The imagination is not a state: it is the human existence itself." -William Blake
Where would the world be without human imagination?
All our lives we've been told to stop day-dreaming. to wake up..to pay attention (ironic really!). We're urged to conform, to tow the line, be a good little citizen, to follow, to follow, to follow.
And even if we had the good fortune to be born into a loving, supportive, non-judgmental family. Even if we got the emotional support and nurturing environment needed to develop our imaginations and dream our dreams at home, it doesn't take us very long out in the 'real' world for us to 'wise up' and 'get real'. To grow up!
I like analogies so here's another which I hope will make clearer the tremendous importance our imaginations' play in our lives.
Imagine yourself in the driving seat of a big fast car, the powerful engine below you idling, fuelled by the energy of your surging emotions.
Your feelings are used to control your clutch, brake, and accelerator enabling you to have full control over the speed and movement.
What a thrill? Jam that gas pedal down. Let's go!!
But wait a minute where are we going? How do I steer this vehicle?
That's where your imagination comes into play. Your imagination is your steering wheel. and you use it to break free from the automated responses and habits that years of apathy and confusion have built up.
Your imagination will set you free!
It is your imagination that will lead you, and unless you want to drive round and round in circles or restrict yourself to driving on the airfield through fear then the more you need to understand and embrace your imagination.
I am free to imagine
